EiA History
For over 40 years in the United States, EiA has helped newcomers adjust to a new language and culture, matching newly arrived immigrants, international students, visitors and others with American volunteers for one-to-one conversation practice. The goal is for participants to master conversational English and, at the same time, learn about American culture and customs. In the United States, EiA is primarily based in New York City. There are approximately 1,250 participants nationwide, including both students and tutors. An offshoot of the EiA, English for Medical Professionals, is geared to the international/immigrant medical community. The specific target audience is the international medical graduate who is unable to gain admission to an American residency program because of limited language skills and cultural incompatibilities, and foreign-born research fellows, who have a critical need for enhanced language skills in order to accurately communicate their findings to their colleagues. English for Medical Professionals offers several levels of language instruction, including training in the four basic language skill areas – speaking, listening, reading and writing – pronunciation and speech; Beginning Level, English as Second Language; and one-to-one conversation.
