The Board of Management of The English Speaking Union (Qld)

The President: ANN GARMS OAM FAIM

Ann Garms has over thirty years experience in the tourism and hospitality sector and is an internationally regarded industry expert. Having, owned, operated and restored six major establishments, Ann manages her business responsibilities concurrently with her work as a consultant to the tourism and hospitality sector and her Interior Design and Furnishing business.

Ann has demonstrated a long commitment to the community, having held the positions of Chair Queensland Government Heritage Advisory Council (1985-1990); Board Member Warana Festival (1985-1996); President and Board Member (Awarded Life Membership) Arthritis Foundation of Queensland (1985-1995); Board Member Tourism and Hospitality Consortium Board (1985-1996); Chair of Hospitality Training Association (1984-1993); Board Member Royal Children’s Hospital Board (1984-1988); Member of the Faculty of Medicine, UQ (representing the Royal Children’s Hospital); Brisbane Polo Club Board Member (1989-2002) & President (2002-2006); Patron of QUT Brisbane Graduate School of Business (BGSB) Fostering Executive Women – FEW – programme; Member of QUT BGSB Advisory Board; Chair Naldham House Heritage Trust (2006—present).

In 1991 Ann was awarded The Order of Australia for Services to Tourism, Hospitality and the Community. In 1993, Ann was awarded the Advance Australia Award for services to Heritage and the Community.

Ann has been involved with the COTAH Community Council followed by the Southbank Institute Board of Directors since 1984 (including the position of Chair from 1996-1999 and Deputy-Chair from 1999-present); and has played a key role in COTAH’s Industry Advisory Executive since 2004.

Additionally, Ann was appointed a Member of HARVARD University Board, John F Kennedy School of Government and Women’s Leadership Board in November 2001; and was appointed as a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management (FAIM) in 2003.

Hon. Secretary Alison Philpott

Alison is an educator with over 40 years experience in teaching, directing, training and consulting. She holds numerous qualifications in Education, Real Estate and Counselling.

Alison has worked in all fields of education, through Early Childhood Education, Primary, VET and University Lecturing in Teacher Education and Developmental Psychology. Her educational research has been published and internationally recognized. Alison has expanded her teaching expertise into the “virtual classroom”, and is a qualified online facilitator involved in curriculum writing and design for online adult learning.

Alison is also a Real Estate trainer and consultant, and owns a boutique real estate agency in Brisbane. She has restored several heritage buildings in Redcliff, Spring Hill and Paddington and is a member of the National Trust.

Alison has held volunteer leadership and training roles in school programs promoting the work of UNICEF and the junior Red Cross, and has operated courses in Life skills for young adults with the Uniting Church. Recently Alison’s diverse community involvement has included volunteering with St John’s ambulance and presenting training courses in organic home gardening for the Toowong Community Garden scheme. She currently combines business activities with volunteer work as a guide at the Mt Cootha Botanical Gardens and her commitment to the English Speaking Union (Qld) as Hon. Secretary.

Board Member Doctor Malcolm Philpott
Malcolm has over 40 years extensive experience in the area of Dental Health. After qualifying through Sheffield University UK., Malcolm owned and operated dental practices in the UK, Germany, Bavaria, the West Indies, and the Sunshine Coast, Australia. His broad international experience has enabled him to utilize and promote the most up to date and successful techniques available in the Dental Health sector. In recognition of Malcolm’s expertise he was awarded Honorary Membership by the Australian Dental Association in 1996. Malcolm still practices in a part time capacity in Brisbane.

Malcolm is an active participant in the community and has been a long time member of Rotary. He has demonstrated leadership as long serving Secretary of Imanuel College P&C. Sunshine Coast and President of the Gympie Gliding Club. In recent years Malcolm has been involved in restoration of heritage buildings in Spring Hill and is an member of the National Trust. Malcolm brings extensive experience in small business to his role as Board member of the English Speaking Union (Qld).

Treasurer James Pitts
James Pitts is currently Hon. Treasurer of the English Speaking Union (Qld). James was appointed to this position and to the ESU Council in 2003. James is a chartered accountant by profession, having qualified in 1976. His initial training and experience was an auditor with Price Waterhouse (now Price Waterhouse Coopers). He spent twelve years at Price Waterhouse, rising to manager level, James was appointed Assistant Registrar (accounting) with the Anglican Diocese of Brisbane in 1983. In 1988, James returned to the accounting profession where he worked first for JC Ellison and Co, Brisbane, and then with DG Guinn and Co in Mount Hagen, Papua New Guinea. In 1999, James returned to Australia and joined the Queensland Public Service as Manager, Taxation, with a specific responsibility for Goods and Services Tax, Fringe Benefits Tax, and payroll tax. He is currently in this role. James’s outside interests include tennis and antique collecting.

Board Member Douglas Rea
Douglas K. Rea is a retired registered insurance broker, formerly Chairman of Drugarm, Australia and Board member of Wesley Hospital Brisbane including Deputy Chairperson and Chair of Finance committee. He was also Chairman of the Board of Pavilion of Promise at World Expo 1986-89. Douglas was Chairman of numerous committees in the life of the former Methodist church, for example, insurance fund and hostel subcommittee. He is a life member of Australian Christian Endeavour, Queensland Churches Cricket Association, DrugArm Australia, and Emeritus Fellow of Wesley Hospital. Douglas has been a distinguished member of the Board of The English Speaking Union for 16 years.

Board member Richard Macedo

Richard is a senior practicing lawyer who graduated from Auckland University with a LLB degree. He is admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand, and is a Solicitor of the High Court of Australia, the Supreme Court of England and Wales and the Supreme Court of Queensland. He is also a member of the Queensland Law Society. After working as an undergraduate in a large commercial law firm in Auckland, Richard spent three years as an in-house lawyer with an American corporation in Sydney. This was followed by 11 years in London, where he married, raised a family and became a highly regarded partner in a well known medium-sized firm in central London. Richard was on the Younger Members Committee of the Victorian League for Commonwealth Friendship at its headquarters in London. On his return to Australia, Richard worked in private practice and became an associate in one of the national law firms before joining Metway Bank in 1994. He is currently Principal Legal Counsel (Banking), in the Suncorp Group. Richard is a committed supporter of a number of local and international charities and is an active member of his local church in Red Hill. He has a passion for British classic cars and is a member of the Triumph Sports Owners Association. He has been an active and dedicated member of the English Speaking Union for 9 years and Board Member since 2008. Richard has recently retired from Suncorp.

Board Member Brian Flaherty

Director appointed August 2009. A former Director some ten years earlier. Brian and Jane Flaherty joined the Victoria Branch in Melbourne in 1971, while being part of a Teacher Exchange programme between New Zealand and Australia. In 1976 Brian was the President of Otago Branch. The branch was always active, and in 1976 hosted among other events a reception for the Ambassador for United States to New Zealand, Armistead Selden, and an event involving the Lord Mayor.
During 1977-1980 he lived near Christchurch and was a member of the Canterbury Branch.
He settled in Brisbane in 1981, after coming for an extended holiday to Australia in 1980. The Queensland Branch was active in the early 1980s with both Ralph Holden and later Mary Holden as President. He was a Director for about a year when Patricia Johnson became President. Brian has worked in education for nearly 40 years, as a teacher and for the past 20 years in administration with a strong focus on industrial relations and employment issues. His work facilitated an involvement with superannuation, and he has been a Trustee Board Director of QIEC Super for 15 years

Board Member Caroline Hatcher

Dr Caroline Hatcher has 15 years experience in tertiary teaching. Dr Hatcher’s work in speech communication has international recognition. She is also widely published in the area of organisational communication and regularly presents at international conferences.
As Secretary-General & Regional Vice President (Australia & New Zealand) of the World Communication Association and former President of the Australian and New Zealand Communication Association, she is actively involved in many aspects of communication research and practice. Dr Hatcher is also a former Director of the Society of Business Communicators, an association that provides professional education opportunities to communication specialists as well as to HR and technology specialists in the public and private sectors. She consults to organisations in the private and public sector, providing advice on effective presentation skills and communication for change management. Dr Hatcher has recently returned from an appointment as Professor of English in Japan. There, she furthered her research interest in the communication management of diversity. She is currently supervising research students in the areas of intercultural communication, communication about gender equity, and the use of various interventions in bringing about successful change.

Dr Hatcher specialises in communication in business. She is the Subject Area Co-ordinator for the specialisation in Business Communication and former MBA Director (2002-2005). She teaches GSN407 and GSN417 with their special focus on speaking and writing. She also teaches GSN457 and GSN459. These units have been developed to give students the opportunity to study communication issues in organisations. Dr Hatcher has a special interest in intercultural business communication. GSN458 was developed to provide students with the opportunity to study issues of culture and how the management of diversity affects organisations.
